Root Canal Treatment at Newcomb Dental
Root Canal Treatment removes the nerve or dental pulp of a tooth, often necessary when the nerve is damaged by trauma or decay. This procedure is an alternative to tooth extraction, aiming to save the damaged tooth.
When Is Root Canal Therapy Needed? Root Canal Therapy is required if the tooth’s nerve or pulp is infected or irreversibly inflamed due to:
- Dental decay
- Dental trauma
- A broken filling or crown
- Extreme wear
- Extensive dental work
- Severe gum disease
Symptoms of Infected/Traumatized Teeth An infected or traumatized tooth can cause severe pain, swelling, sensitivity to pressure (e.g., biting), and thermal changes. Pain may also disrupt sleep and isn’t always relieved by analgesics.
Procedure Overview Root Canal Treatment involves removing the inflamed or infected pulp. The canal within each root is cleaned, prepared, and filled with a material to replace the removed nerve tissue. This procedure may require multiple visits, with antibacterial dressings placed in between appointments to aid healing and reduce infection. A temporary filling protects the tooth during this period.
Post-Treatment Care After completing Root Canal Therapy, your dentist may recommend placing a dental crown over the tooth to protect it long-term.
At Newcomb Dental, our trained dentists handle Root Canal Therapy procedures. Patients may also be referred to an Endodontist, a specialist in Root Canal Therapy, if needed.
